This project was initiated by the Tech4Nature group who are keen to show how technology can be put to use for compassionate purposes.  We are looking to use technology to help solve why the hedgehog population is falling through a citizen science approach. Our monitoring system also seeks to provide a greater depth of data on hedgehog populations in urban environments.

We have three key technologies to help us support hedgehogs:

  • Hogbox - monitoring video, sound, weight, temperature and chip identity.
  • Hedgehog live - a web portal which gives access to live data from the Hogbox
  • Hedgehog sightings - online database which allows the public report hedgehog sitings

The technologies are used in conjunction with schools and communities building a network of urban environments - Hedgehog Republics
